Coldplay is not backing down from its popular jumbotron segment despite a viral incident involving a tech CEO and an alleged affair.
During a Monday night performance in Kingston upon Hull, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin addressed the controversy that has since gone viral, confirming that the band intends to continue their interactive concert segment that had become the center of the “debacle” last month.
The incident occurred when Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and HR executive Kristin Cabot were filmed during Coldplay’s concert in the greater Boston area. The footage captured the pair sitting together, seemingly in an intimate moment, before they abruptly reacted to being put on the jumbotron. Byron ducked out of frame, while Cabot turned away and covered her face.
After reading a fan’s sign referencing the incident, Martin commented, “You were at that Boston gig. Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle.”
“We’ve been doing this a long time,” Martin continued, referring to the jumbotron segment. “And it is only recently that it became a… yeah. Life throws you lemons, and you’ve got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you.”
The Jumbotron Song segment, where Martin uses an interactive camera to spotlight unsuspecting fans and improvises short, personalized songs about them, has been a staple of Coldplay’s shows. The viral moment, however, added an unexpected layer of drama when Byron and Cabot were caught on camera during their private moment.
“Uh oh, what?” Martin remarked at the time. “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
The moment quickly spread across social media, leading to an internal investigation at Astronomer, which resulted in both Byron and Cabot leaving the company. The incident has since become a pop culture talking point.
In light of the event, Martin humorously introduced a new warning at a show in Wisconsin, saying, “We’re going to use our cameras and put some of you on the big screen. So, please, if you haven’t done your makeup, do your makeup now.”
In a twist of irony, Astronomer got the last laugh by hiring actress Gwyneth Paltrow—Martin’s ex-wife—as a temporary spokesperson. Paltrow responded to questions about the viral incident in a tongue-in-cheek video, answering, “Yes. Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow, unifying the experience of running data ML and AI pipelines at scale.”
