Charlie Kirk, the 31‑year‑old founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed Wednesday during a speaking event at Utah Valley University, according to authorities and his organization.
The shooting occurred at about 12:10 p.m. under a white tent marked with the slogans “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong,” as students and attendees gathered at the Sorensen Center courtyard. A single gunshot rang out. Video posted to social media shows Kirk grasping at his neck shortly afterward.
Kirk was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Authorities are investigating. It remains unclear who fired the shot or the motive behind it. Officials initially said a suspect was in custody, but later clarified no suspects had been arrested.
Turning Point USA confirmed the shooting, and its public relations manager, Aubrey Laitsch, said, “We are confirming that he was shot and we are praying for Charlie.”
President Donald Trump mourned Kirk as a close friend and ally, calling for prayers. Vice President J.D. Vance echoed the sentiment, saying the country should be praying for Kirk.
Kirk was known for mobilizing conservative students on college campuses and for his outspoken support of conservative causes and free speech. He co‑founded Turning Point USA in 2012.
