On Monday, A small plane crashed onto a car while attempting an emergency landing on Interstate 95, after experiencing a “loss of power in both engines,” the National Transportation Safety Board reported.
Video of the incident shows the aircraft rapidly descending before striking the vehicle. Sparks flew as the plane skidded along the highway and came to a stop against a guardrail, leaving the car severely damaged underneath.
Jim and Peter Coffey, a father and son driving nearby, witnessed the crash. The car’s occupant, a 57-year-old woman, suffered only minor injuries, according to local fire rescue officials.
The plane had departed from Merritt Island on an instructional flight. Following the engine failure, the pilot was forced to land on the highway.
The two men on board, both 27, were unharmed, the Florida Highway Patrol said. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
